Welcome to the Toledo-Lucas County Rain Garden Initiative
The TLC Rain Garden Initiative was formed in 2006 in response to Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur who suggested that we needed to find ways to encourage the infiltration of stormwater into the ground instead of trying to build bigger and better ditches and sewers in Toledo and Lucas County. She was inspired by an effort to build 10,000 rain gardens in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Toledo-Lucas County Rain Garden Initiative’s mission is to promote natural stormwater management and urban beautification in efforts to protect our local watersheds.
TLC Rain Garden Initiative works to reduce pollution using the following approach:
- We introduce the idea of rain gardens throughout our region
- We replace hard surfaces with gardens and assist in constructing rain gardens as a way to manage storm water.
- We educate residents and students; provide demonstration gardens, technical training and public information and involvement.
- We work hand-in-hand with communities to promote pollution control methods.
